Scholarship Description

Australia is a world leader in production of many mineral commodities including iron ore, lithium, alumina, copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. We are seeking research higher degree candidates who wish to contribute to the development of hydrometallurgical processing technologies for these commodities through experimental and mathematical modelling studies of selected aspects of the chemical and physical phenomenon occurring in these processes. This project supported by Newcrest, one of the world’s largest gold producers, provides an exciting opportunity to undertake fundamental and applied research studies while working closely with industry. The project is related to pressure oxidation of gold-bearing sulphide mineral feed. Pressure oxidation is used to chemically liberate gold from the sulphide matrix making it available for subsequent cyanidation. The project will investigate approaches to improve the process with respect to impurity and gangue mineral interactions which are costly to the operation. Newcrest runs a pressure oxidation facility at their Lihir operation in Papua New Guinea.
